Books by Hand, Gerard Brender à Brandis, Wood Engraver and Bookwright – Marianne Brandis — Many strands of my research and writing experience came together in the creation of this professional biography of my brother Gerard, the well-known Canadian wood engraver and creator of limited-edition handmade books.    I have collaborated with him on more than a dozen projects.  This has given me a close insight into his thinking and his working practices. By examining one artist’s unique career, Books by Hand also reflects on creativity in general.  Creativity intrigues me because, although the results are all around us, the process is elusive.  I reflected not only on Gerard’s art itself but also on the creativity that he showed in inventing the kind of life that would foster his art.

Swan Flying – Marianne BrandisSwan Flying is set in Stratford, Ontario, and the swan in this passage is one of Stratford’s iconic birds.  Marta de Witt, the central character, is standing on the arched bridge depicted on the book’s cover.  The swan’s flying over her, barely six feet above her head, is a momentous experience because Stratford’s swans, who have their wings pinioned, rarely fly and never go high or far.  The flying swan is one of the central images in this multifaceted book.

Romancing The Bard, Stratford at Fifty – Martin Hunter — Romancing the Bard offers a look at the Stratford Festival in its first fifty years as it developed from a bold venture driven by vision of a handful of eager enthusiasts to its present status as a multi-million dollar cultural and commercial enterprise. With profiles of Stratford personalities from founder Tyrone Guthrie to current artistic director Richard Monette, it provides glimpses of intrigue and conflict both offstage and on. The book traces the development of a distinctive Canadian acting style, the soaring costs of production and design, the conflict between artists and moneymen, the external image promoted by publicists or imposed by critics and the changing mandate as the Festival assumes an increasingly populist character. This is a celebration of a uniquely successful artistic enterprise, and focuses on some of the Festival’s finest productions.

A Stratford Tempest – Martin Knelman — Right from the start, the story of the Stratford Festival has been at least partly a gleeful farce about a group of rustics, not unlike those in a Midsummers Night’s Dream, who had stumbled into something big. By the fall of 1980, it became apparent to the Canadian public that all was not well with the Stratford Shakespearean Festival. This is the powerful of small town businessmen, whose dream began in a tent pitched on the banks of the Avon River and grew to be one of the most lucrative tourists attractions in the country.

Floodtides of Fortune, the Story of Stratford and the Progress of the City Through Two Centuries – Adelaide Leitch — In 19th century England, a group of illustrious businessmen planned the establishment of a city in the Canadian wilderness… Across the ocean, in the Huron Tract of Upper Canada, surveyors and explorers, woodsmen and road builders were busy with maps and journals, and these suggested a likely site. On a small coffee-coloured river, the Court of Directors of the Canada Company placed Stratford, third Company town and somewhat of an afterthought. And so began, with deceptive calm, a remarkable city.

The Life of a Backwoodsman, Or, Particulars of the Emigrant’s Situation in Settling on the Wild Land of Canada – J. E. Linton — “ Life of a Backwoodsman” is written by a settler in the Huron District, (formerly the “ Huron Tract”) Canada West. He has lived in the Village of Stratford and its neighbourhood for more than nine years past, having arrived at that place in July, 1833, though the village was then existing almost only in name. The writer has written the “ Life” from actual observation and experience ; he has borne a share of all the hardships of a settler, and the vicissitudes and trials endured by an emigrating family. He would disdain to write what is not consistent with truth. The remarks in the “ Life” may there- fore, as regards the details given, be depended on as containing what is true.

SIFF, which ran from 1956-61 and again from 1971-6, was Canada’s first international festival for feature films. The film festival asserted Canada’s cultural presence on the world stage as part of a larger push to raise Canada’s cultural profile in the aftermath of the Second World War, and built on the meteoric success of the theatre and music programs at the Stratford Festival.

Lucky Lott: Hell Driver – Dean Robinson — “Lucky Lott: Hell Driver is a 50-year romp through the often-celebrated but seldom understood world of automobile daredevils. The tour guide is Douglas Neal (Lucky) Lott, a native of Pekin, Ill., who moved to Stratford, ON. On a wild road trip that stretches from Hamilton to Havana, and from Sherbrooke to Chicago, we learn about rollovers, T-bones, ramp-to-ramp jumps, head-on crashes — and about the chilling consequences if the stunts are not executed properly. While the Evel Knievels-come-lately can add a recent chapter to this tale of man and machine, they can never recapture the pioneer spirit that started it all.” The Boston Mills Press, 1985

Seaforth, Beginnings – Dean Robinson — “Seaforth, Ontario, is a remarkable community. Although in many ways it’s like any number of small urban centres in southwestern Ontario dating to the Victorian period, this town stands out for three major reasons. Firstly, Seaforth has been blessed over the years with people of almost incredible vision, hard work and community spirit. Secondly, and to no small extent a result of the first reason, the town has a very rich heritage  of buildings, photographs, stories and memories. And thirdly, Seaforth is doing something to preserve that heritage.” — Tom Lemon’s introduction in the book, September 1987. At the time, he was the main street co-ordinator for Seaforth.

Reflections – A History of the Stratford Agricultural Society 1841-1991 – Dean Robinson — “If adversity builds character, the Stratford Agricultural Society never needs to worry about being dull. In 150 years it has faced bankruptcy, homelessness and indifference. It has survived drought, Depression, war and the Temperance and Moral Reform Association. And it has given Stratford and area a fall fair in all of those years – well, in almost all of those years. Someone said a history such as this is like a rear-view mirror, and looking in to it can be enlightening. Those who know from where they came are more apt to know where they are going. One hundred and fifty years make a big mirror.” — from the introduction in the book

The Hills of Home, North Easthope Township 1827-1997 – writer/editor Dean Robinson — “North Easthope Township is now part of the municipality of Perth East, but because of this book, this township will never be forgotten,” said the book committee chair Pat Campbell. “Our goal was to document and publish the life and times, or tales of kith and kin, of the families of our great township. This book should not be seen as a historian’s definitive view or as a genealogical study, but rather as an effort to preserve the heritage of our township. It reflects the people’s dreams and heartbreaks, their joys and their sorrows, their accomplishments and their failures. But most of all it is a book that you will enjoy reading.”

Echoes of Ellice : Ellice township 1827-1997 – Dean Robinson — This book is about the life and times of Ellice on the 16 concessions and in the six villages that made up the township from 1827 to 1997. Lot by lot, it features land registry information, and stories and photographs submitted by those who have owned and lived on those lots. Other information came from the Perth County branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society, church records, newspaper clippings, photo albums, scrapbooks, Tweedsmuir history books, family trees and the memories of residents past and present. As much as possible, lot ownership is presented in this book as it is recorded in the land registry office.

Picture Mitchell, 1857-1997 – Dean Robinson — A lot happened in Mitchell in the 140 years that it was a village and town. While this book doesn’t pretend to cover all those happenings, it does present, in chronological format, some of the events that helped to shape Mitchell’s character and the character of its residents. An attempt was made to illustrate as many and as much of those events as possible. There was also an effort to use photos that had not appeared in previous books or booklets about Mitchell, though is some cases the urge to republish could not be suppressed.

Water Under the Bridges, Fullarton Township 1824-1997— writer/editor Dean Robinson — While John Fullarton gave his name to our township, the people who came, settled, endured hardships, stayed, worked, raised families and died here were, in fact, the township. It is their stories, woven together, which have created the fabric of our community. This two-book set focuses on those people. While amalgamation has determined we are now a ward in the Township of West Perth, this book will forever celebrate our life and times as Fullarton Township. taken from the book introduction by committee chair, Jean Park, 2000

Memories of Downie – Downie Township – Vol 1 & 2 – Dean Robinson

Lot histories are the focus of this two-book set, whether farm or village lots. Land registry information was sought for every lot regardless of size. Getting that information was not always easy, in that there were some handshake land deals never recorded. As well, some names were spelled phonetically, others in error. Inconsistencies were hard to avoid. Other information came from owners and people who lived on the lots. Many stories and photographs were  also drawn from other sources. This work comprises two volumes, the first covering lot histories in the Gore of Downie, the triangle east of Highway 7 and 19, and lot histories in the villages, as well as chapters on government and services, churches, schools, groups, agriculture, sports and veterans. The other volume contains the history of properties in what was commonly called the square of Downie, to the west of Highway No. 7 and 19.

Overdue, Stratford Library Services, 1846-2003 – Dean Robinson — It may have been men who facilitated its birth, in 1897, but it was women who directed the Stratford Public Library for 104 of its first 106 years. That the library had just six directors during its first century says something about the commitment of those people, and about the trustees who worked with them to provide a service that was often threatened by controversy, by a lack of space, and by a shortage of money. Indeed, doing more with less became part of the job description for those charged with running the SPL. In shining a light on those years, this book celebrates the dedicated staff and the volunteers who stepped up to embrace the library and defend its importance to the community.

For Your Health, Stratford General Hospital 1891-2002 – Dean Robinson with Carolynn Bart-Riedstra — “Stratford’s new hospital drew citizens by the thousands on or about the day it was declared officially open. But they came out of curiosity, not necessity. In fact, in its first few months of operation, the hospital attracted only a few in need of medical attention. But that was no surprise; many people were suspicious of the huge new institution. They thought the care it offered would be expensive, and they continued to set up sick rooms in their homes. The hospital, many thought, was a place in which to die. It took more than a little missionary work on the part of the city and area physicians to “sell” the hospital as a place for treatment, recovery and recuperation.”

By the Old Mill Stream, Carlingford 1856-2004 – Lois McIntosh and Dean Robinson — This book’s central focus is on a crossroads village called Carlingford, in what was known for many years as Fullarton Township. It is an account, up to 2004, of the families who lived in that school section. In the main, the stories and photos were drawn from families still in  the area, and from those who had moved away. They were also gathered from archives and genealogical sources, and from the Tweedsmuir histories of women’s institutes. They paint a colourful and memorable picture.

A Fair Legacy, the Mitchell and District Agricultural Society, 1854-2004 – Dean Robinson — For most students in and around Mitchell — and their parents, there was no event on the fall calendar as memorable their town’s fair. Every September, scores of volunteers worked tirelessly to make each fair better than its predecessor. It was always a day of sensory overload, thanks to midway barkers with their games and rides and music, 4-H clubs and junior farmers with their livestock competitions, food vendors selling everything from candy floss to bacon burgers. On the half-mile track there were horse races, and in the Crystal Palace colourful crafts and artwork. Liberally sprinkled with photographs, this book is an account of the society’s first 150 years and its fairs.

Historically Bound – the History of Embro and West Zorra – Dean Robinson — We are indebted to the residents, and many others living outside the area, who spent much time writing stories and searching photo albums for their submissions. We were humbled by your trust in loaning us irreplaceable documents and family pictures. Along the way, we have learned there can be many different spellings of names in documents, even within the same family. Many transactions have not been legally recorded. Hardly Normal, The Stratford Normal School and Stratford Teachers’ College, 1908-1973 – Dean Robinson — Each September for 65 years, they came, their minds a mix of anticipation and apprehension. Most were teenagers, away from home for the first time. In turn, they reflected in micro fashion a country shaped by the popularity of radio, the assembly-line automobile, two world wars, a flu pandemic, the Great Depression, a golden age of capitalism, the advent of television, the evolution of rock and roll, the civil rights movement, a new wave of feminism, a war in Vietnam, the assassination of a U. S. president, and a space race. So it was for almost 14,000 students (about 90 per cent of them from out of town). This book is about those students and the institution that contributed in no small way to the life and the economy of a city better known for furniture manufacturing and the repair of railway locomotives.

Railway Stratford Revisited - Dean Robinson

Railway Stratford Revisited – Dean Robinson — For almost twice as long as it has been called the Festival City, Stratford was known as a railway centre. It was a divisional headquarters and home to a giant motive power repair facility for the better part of a century. In the days when steam propelled the nation’s trains, the payrolls of the GTR and the CNR drove the economy of Stratford. This book is an expanded revision of Railway Stratford, which was published in 1989 by The Boston Mills Press. There have been a few changes in the original work, to correct errors, update and augment where possible. This edition contains an additional 24 pages — bonus tracks if you will — filled mostly with photos and additional information from the era that so characterized Stratford as one of the foremost railway hubs in Canada.

42 Wellington, the music and the memories 1929-1969 – Dean Robinson — The Worth Block, built in the late 1880s, dominates the west side of Wellington Street in Stratford’s city centre. It might also be the most storied in terms of its social, civic and musical past. Stretching from 38 to 46 Wellington St., the block provided retail outlets on its street level, while its upper two storeys were more for offices, living quarters and meeting halls. At some point, the Worths filled their entire third floor with a ballroom. Beginning in 1929, and for much of the next four decades, that ballroom was the city’s best-known dance place. Its offerings moved from big band and swing, to country and western, to rock and roll, and rhythm and blues. And in the summers of 1964 and 1965, Harry Finlay and his Black Swan coffee house nested on the second floor. This book is filled with the music and memories of 42 Wellington.

Not the last waltz and other Stratford stories – Dean Robinson — With luck, the stories in this book will inform and entertain. They are not linked by theme or time period, or by the people around whom they unfold. rather, they are set in hockey rinks and music halls, in parklands and the Queen of the Square. They deal with a reunion and a runaway, trophies and a train wreck, death and demolition. There is some celebration and orchestration, a liquor raid and a Sunday parade.

From Walker’s Folly to 100, Oakwood Park 1922-2022 – Dean Robinson — Much in the way Oakwood Park’s colourful history was gathered and celebrated in the association’s 70th anniversary book, in 1992 (From Walker’s folly to fabulous), this publication adds a further three decades of memories, stories and photos. At the same time, additional materials online, and from residents past and present, have enriched the original narrative. As in 1992, the telling of the stories in this book shines some light on the life and times of Grand Bend in general.

A Century of Service, The Rotary Club of Stratford, 1922-2022 Dean Robinson — In the three decades since the Rotary Club of Stratford’s 70th birthday, in 1992, the Rotary footprint in the city has been enlarged and strengthened by the formation of a committed sister club. In the same 30 years, what the senior club has accomplished is, by any measure, worthy of  further note. Throughout those same 30 years, Bill Lemmon devoted much of his life to Rotary. While a charter member of the Mitchell Rotary Club, he was the governor for District 6330. He says, as the DG, “I always held up this (Stratford) club as a role model for other clubs in the district.” Veteran newspaperman and Stratford Rotarian Tom Dolan, who died in 1981, would be delighted to hear that high praise. He might also like to know the story of his beloved Rotary club has been updated and published once again.
