Under This Roof has been formally submitted to both the Stratford-Perth Archives and the McMaster Archives, where it joins Gerard’s extensive personal records. A Home Steeped in History
In 2005, renowned wood engraver and bookwright Gerard Brender À Brandis moved into a charming Greek Revival cottage in Stratford, Ontario, and decided to make it his home and business. Built in 1866, this architectural gem carries decades of history within its walls.
What makes this cottage particularly special is its restoration in the 1980s by James Anderson, Perth County’s first archivist. Anderson’s meticulous work and unwavering commitment to preserving the building’s character proved visionary—at a time when many historic structures were being demolished, he ensured this one would endure.
Art Meets Preservation
In the documentary, Gerard and his sister Marianne welcome viewers into their world, revealing the intricate craft of wood engraving and bookmaking. Through their work and passion, they celebrate these time-honoured traditions while honouring those who have dedicated their lives to safeguarding our architectural heritage.
This is the story of three legacies intertwined: a beautifully preserved cottage, a dedicated archivist’s vision, and a master artist’s skill—together forming a rich tapestry of history and craft.
